NCCS Publishes New White Paper To Help Families Battling Pediatric Cancer Find Emotional and Financial Support

St. Louis, Missouri – Resources to help families cope with the emotional and financial issues they face when a child has cancer are outlined in a new white paper published by The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS), a nonprofit organization that helps children with cancer and their families from diagnosis to survivorship.

From the initial overwhelming task of meeting with multiple doctors to plan treatment, juggling caregiving for other children and handling exorbitant medical bills, parents of a child with cancer live on a roller coaster of heartache and stress. The paper highlights the stories of two parents of children diagnosed with cancer at ages four and 23 months who share the ways they handled issues such as family separations and the financial impact of caring for an ill child.

The paper also provides coping tips and resources where families can get help with travel expenses, medical bills, counseling and other needs that might arise.

“As an organization that exists solely to help families deal with the emotional and financial tolls of childhood cancer, we want to do everything we can to provide the support parents need, including referring them to other resources,” said Julie Komanetsky, vice president of Patient and Family Services at the NCCS. “We know from working closely with families for many years that help from organizations like the NCCS has a positive impact on their ability to cope with their child’s cancer.”

The white paper also includes a link to an NCCS free and printable guide to assist parents with all facets of childhood cancer called The Other Side of the Mountain.
