Meet Liam—Leukemia Warrior!

Meet Liam

“NCCS has helped so much. Cancer has impacted us emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. Having them (NCCS) in our corner makes this journey a whole lot more bearable. I couldn’t thank them more.”

Cara was barely getting by when Liam, her six-year old son, was diagnosed with leukemia. On top of Liam’s cancer diagnosis, he developed multiple, serious health issues. Severe neuropathy in his legs caused him to develop drop foot and walk with a limp. A blood clot formed on his heart. A fungal infection and double pneumonia in his lungs caused his to be in the hospital for two months where he developed ICU psychosis. “It was one thing after another,” said Cara.

His treatment center was over four hours away and he needed to go twice a week. Eight hours every seven days spent in the car just to get her child to lifesaving treatment leaving her two other young children in the care of others.

In the midst of all of this happening, Cara was let go from her job. The risk of her getting sick and passing to Liam (or any of her children) due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented her from finding other work. The family moved in with her my parents because living alone with not an option.

Liam did not go into remission after his first round of chemo which makes his risk for relapse extremely high. “We do our absolute best to remain humble and very thankful,” shared Cara. “NCCS has helped so much. Cancer has impacted us emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. Having them (NCCS) in our corner makes this journey a whole lot more bearable. I couldn’t thank them more.”
