Meet Hannah – Leukemia Warrior!

Meet Hannah

In addition to the financial support the organization provided, their NCCS case manager gave them much-needed emotional support.

Support from the organization’s Transportation Assistance Fund and Emergency Assistance Fund helped this family tremendously. Out of nowhere, 12 year-old Hannah began experiencing extreme fatigue, bone and joint pain. However, it wasn’t until she woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air that her mother, Katie, rushed her to the emergency room. The doctors refused to run any tests and believed her breathing troubles stemmed from anxiety and heartburn. Dissatisfied with that conclusion, Katie took her daughter to their pediatrician. The moment the doctor saw how pale and exhausted Hannah was he immediately ordered a battery of tests. As soon as the results came back, her doctor broke the heartbreaking news – Hannah was battling a very rare form of leukemia.

Treatment began immediately and the complications seemed endless. She fought meningitis, numerous bouts of sepsis and septic shock, mucositis, and allergic reactions to many of her medications. She lost her hair and the medications changed her appearance, both of which were emotionally devastating to this young girl.

The frequent trips and long stays at the hospital for Hannah’s treatment were rapidly affecting Katie’s bank accounts. Their hospital social worker saw this family’s heartbreaking struggles and referred them to the NCCS. In addition to the financial support the organization provided, their NCCS case manager gave them much-needed emotional support. She also sent them a free parent guide to help Katie and a free activity book for Hannah to help them through this difficult time.
